Was that a prank? |
However, the main praise many pointed out was the value of the sponsorship for being the highest a football club ever got.
We pointed back then that getting a higher deal than the rest was just because it was the most recent, and predicted this record not to survive enough to offer enough answers to doubters.
There were so many added values to benefit from while negotiating a sponsorship agreement for FC Barcelona:
1) Being the first ever to sponsor such a great club with the history background supporting it and providing it the immunity against sponsorship deals. To be the first to achieve what others failed to get in a hundred year should have a price - big one.
2) At that point, FC Barcelona was already the best in the world. Winning all titles for fun Playing the best football there is. Already considered one of the best (if not the best) ever in football history. Having the best players in the world and one of the best (if not the best) in football's history. That's not just another great club, it is The Club of the moment.
For a sponsorship offer to worth looking at, it should've been good enough to survive at least five years (or the contract duration) as the highest worldwide.
We predicted back then that ANY big club in Europe will exceed that value in their following sponsorship agreements canceling all the negotiation leverages mentioned above. And it happened.

After a hundred year of sanity, FC Barcelona sold their shirt's virginity for a price that failed to survive at the top for two years. What a waste.
When it come to FC Barcelona's interest there is no two ways to say it. Either Qatar foundation made a joke out of Rosell's board and the club, or both Qatar foundation and Rosell made a joke out of the club while counting their earnings to the bank. Maybe, Rosell found a better source of "business" than Brazil.
